Fort Lauderdale only designated historic neighborhood dates back to 1450 BC when Tequesta Indians, who later became the Seminoles, lived in the area. As the birth place of “Fort Lauderdale“, back in 1838, U.S Army Major William Lauderdale built “Fort” Lauderdale to fight the Seminoles.
Located south of Broward Boulevard and surrounded by New River on the South and West, Sailboat Bend is an eclectic display of building styles and designs. In the early 1900s, residents of the area, mostly working-class, built their own homes without taking into consideration any building codes resulting in a diverse array of cozy residences. Today, the one-story cottages still conserve a lot of their original structures mostly frame construction. The blend between these homes and new constructions make Sailboat Bend a diverse and yet transitional neighborhood.
