Broward County’s smallest town, 13.5-acre Village of Lazy Lake is affectionately called “the little city that could.” With a population of less than 40 and the lowest taxes in Broward County, the town has no stop light, no gas station, no website and only one road to call its own. If you blink you might miss this oasis, however, big things come in small packages.
Uniquely situated walking distance to businesses and shops of Wilton Drive, Lazy Lake borders Wilton Manors just East of Andrews Avenue, west of Northeast 1st Avenue, Northeast 24th Street to the North and Northeast 21st Court to the South.
This exclusive enclave is in the middle of a bustling urban environment. This quaint city was incorporated in 1953, and despite being hit hard by several hurricanes, has enjoyed a revitalization that includes a fresh water spring fed lake with swans, herons, egrets, fish of many varieties and turtles. The one road has been resurfaced and lined with street lights and native trees. A boat ramp was added with direct access to the Middle River. With an annual budget of $30,000, the town has its own police and fire chiefs and a newly established town hall.
Nine of the town’s fifteen homes, ranging from cottages to large three bedroom contemporary homes, hug “Lazy Lake” itself, a man-made 3.5 acre quarry originally excavated to mine coral rock. Although there are no comps for this area because supply is non-existent, Lazy Lake could be a poster child for smart sustainable growth.
This village’s quirky character offers the best of worlds, a petite city with country charm and the proximity of vibrant city life.
